Guitar cases can come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles. A foam guitar case is a simple case that keeps the instrument protected and safe without adding too much extra weight like the wooden cases often add. It is an ideal case for short trips or trips where the guitar does not need the protection of wood or other harder materials. A simple foam guitar case is easy to make and it is an inexpensive way to keep the guitar out of the elements.

Measure the guitar. Measure the length, width and depth of the instrument with the measuring tape. Be careful not to damage the wood of the guitar while measuring if the measuring tape has metal on the end.
Cut the nylon fabric to approximately 8 to 10 inches or so longer than the guitar. This ensures that there is enough fabric. Cut four pieces of nylon fabric to this length.
Place the guitar on the nylon fabric. Trace an outline of the guitar, adding 4 inches around the entire structure. Trace the shape using chalk or a marker.
Cut out the guitar shape. Cut all four pieces of nylon fabric into the shape. It might be necessary to cut the fabric one at a time until there are four nylon guitar-shaped pieces of fabric.
Place the guitar on top of a sheet of foam and outline the guitar like the fabric was outlined. Make sure that the foam outline is made to be approximately three inches around so that it is about an inch around less than the nylon fabric. Cut out a second piece of foam in the same dimensions as the first.
Place one piece of foam between two pieces of nylon fabric and sew the nylon together so that the foam is inside the nylon. Repeat this with the other piece of foam and two pieces of nylon fabric.
Sew the two foam-filled nylon pieces together along one side. Leave the other side open so that the guitar can be placed inside the case along that side.
Sew the zipper onto the second side. Each side of the zipper should be sewn onto the opposite sides of the case.
Sew the handle onto the case. The nylon handle should be added to the side with the zipper so that when the case is being carried, the zipper does not open and spill out the guitar. Put the guitar in the case to ensure that it fits.
