In a tight economy families are trying to cut costs wherever they can and make things they would otherwise buy. The common scratch pad for washing dishes is one of those do-it-yourself items that you can make for pennies and will last much longer than the store-bought variety. They are very durable and the plastic fibres will not harm the surfaces of your dishes. Nylon netting is less than a dollar a yard and one yard can make two scrubbers. Crochet scratch pads using a simple circle pattern.

  • 1/2 yard nylon netting, 72 inches wide
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Crochet hook, size I

Instructions

  1. 1

    Cut the width of the nylon netting into inch-wide strips. Knot the strips together to create one continuous length. Roll the netting into a ball to prevent it from tangling as you are crocheting the scratch pad.

    Crochet four chain stitches. Slip stitch into the first chain made to form a ring. Crochet one chain stitch. Single crochet six times in the ring. Slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain stitch.

    Crochet one chain stitch. Single crochet twice in each stitch around the scratch pad for a total of 12 single crochet stitches. Slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain stitch.

    Crochet one chain stitch. Single crochet once in the first stitch and twice in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern around the scratch pad for a total of 18 single crochet stitches. Slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain stitch.

    Crochet one chain stitch. Single crochet once in each of the first two stitches and twice in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern around the scratch pad for a total of 24 single crochet stitches. Slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain stitch.

    Crochet one chain stitch. Single crochet once in each of the first three stitches and twice in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern around the scratch pad for a total of 30 single crochet stitches. Slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain stitch.

    Crochet one chain stitch. Single crochet once in each of the first four stitches and twice in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern around the scratch pad for a total of 36 single crochet stitches. Slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain stitch.

    Crochet one chain stitch. Single crochet once in each of the first five stitches and twice in the next stitch. Repeat this pattern around the scratch pad for a total of 42 single crochet stitches. Slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain stitch.

  9. 9

    Knot, cut and weave the strip's end into the stitches of the scratch pad.
