The Volvo Xc90 is classified as a mid-sized luxury crossover SUV. The designation "crossover" speaks to its relationship to passenger cars regarding the chassis and drive train. Volvo includes a 4, 5, or 6 speed automatic transmission in the Xc90. The transmission requires regular maintenance to include maintaining the proper level of transmission fluid at all times. Driving the Volvo with an inadequate level of fluid will cause the transmission to perform improperly; causing unnecessary engine wear, low fuel mileage and eventually transmission damage. Add transmission fluid yourself versus going to a service station, to save time and money.

Pull the hood release lever under the Volvo Xc90's dashboard. The lever is located on the driver's side of the dashboard. Move to the engine compartment.
Reach into the opening between the bonnet and the front of the vehicle and lift the bonnet release latch to lift the bonnet.
Remove the transmission fluid dipstick from the slot on the right of the engine. Wipe the dipstick clean with the towel. Return the stick to the slot, wait 10 seconds and remove it for reading.
Read the fluid level on the dipstick. The fluid should be visible between the two notches near the end of the dipstick. If the fluid level is at or below the lower of the two notches (closest to the end of the stick), additional fluid is necessary.
Place a funnel into the dipstick slot opening and pour transmission fluid into the reservoir.
Replace the dipstick and read the fluid level once more. If the fluid level reads at or near the top notch in the dipstick, the fluid level is adequate. If not, replace the funnel and add more fluid.
