Burlesque-style fashion has a degree of hyper-femininity: Women often don high heels, corsets, pencil skirts, red lipstick and red nails. When it comes to burlesque hairstyles, they are pure glamour, a mix of the 1930s and '40s, and involve making curls, rolls and waves in the hair with curlers, hair pins, hair spray and loads of patience. With some practice you'll be able to make a range of burlesque hairstyle that compliment any look.

Things you need
- Steam rollers of a range of sizes with clips
- Decorative barrette
- Decorative clips
- 2 cardboard toilet paper rolls
- Hair pins
Divide your hair into 14 to 16 small sections or locks. If your hair is thick, you may need to make more sections. Lightly comb through each section so that it is tangle free.
Wrap each lock of hair around a small or medium sized roller. Make absolutely sure that you start at the very bottom of each lock, rolling the roller under the hair as you twist it upward. Secure each roller with a clip.
Take a small lock of hair in the front of your face and curl it around a small roller. Clip it in place.
Leave the rollers for a minimum of 20 minutes in your hair. Unroll each curler very carefully. Part your hair on the side with a comb.
Starting at the top of your head, brush your curls down and under, creating a "J" shape with your brush. Do not brush out the small curl that you made in the front of your face. Continue brushing the hair down and under in this manner until all your hair is curled under. Spray your entire head with hairspray.
Slide a jewelled barrette into your hair above one of your ears. Position your small curl in the front of the face so that it curves towards either the right or left side of your face. Spray in place with hairspray.
Gather the hair at the top of your head starting from the hair above your ears and pull it up onto the flat part of your head. Clip it in place. Take your remaining lower portion of hair and clip it at the nape of the neck.
Divide your top portion of hair into two uneven sections: one section should stretch from your right ear to your left eye. The other section should go from your left eye to your left ear. Comb out each section so that it is perfectly smooth and tangle free.
Take the bigger portion of the top section of hair and curl it around a the cardboard roll from a toilet paper roll. Make sure you curl by starting with the ends of the hair first, wrapping the hair around the roll in a direction that goes towards the back of your head. Pin the cardboard roll in place. Repeat this process with the other, smaller top section of hair.
Place your hand on top of the first roll that you made. Take out the pins. With one hand on the rolled hair, use your other hand to pull out the cardboard roll. You should have one half of a pompadour. Pin this roll in place against your scalp. Saturate it in hair spray. Repeat this process with the other roll.
Take your bottom portion of hair and comb it out. Tuck the ends of the hair underneath the hair by the nape of the neck into a chignon bun. Clip it in place with a decorative clip and spray with hair spray.
