Getting a manicure and pedicure doesn't just make you look better, it can make you feel better, too. Whether you are going to a salon or doing your own manicure and pedicure at home, the process can be very relaxing. Unfortunately, it isn't always easy to afford spa treatments such as manicures and pedicures. If you have never done your own manicure and pedicure, follow a few simple guidelines to get started.
Remove any nail polish on your toenails. Use a cotton ball and nail polish remover to swab off all remnants of polish.
Soak your feet in a large plastic basin or foot spa. In addition to warm water, you can add an over-the-counter foot soak or Epsom salts to soften the skin. Allow your feet to soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
Remove your feet from the warm water. Gently towel dry your feet.
Apply cuticle softener to the cuticle on each toenail. Wait 3 to 5 minutes, then use a cuticle stick to gently push the cuticle on each toenail back.
Slough off dead skin cells with a pumice stone.
Trim and file toenails to the desired shape.
Wash your feet with an exfoliating foot scrub. Rinse your feet, towel them dry and apply a moisturising lotion.
Apply a base coat to each toenail. Apply two coats of a nail polish and follow with one layer of top coat to protect from chipping. While your feet dry, sit still and do a home manicure.
Remove nail polish from your fingernails. Use a cotton ball and nail polish remover rather than soaking your nails in a dish of nail polish remover, because soaking in nail polish remover can damage your nails.
Trim and file your nails to your desired shape. Some people prefer rounded tips, while others prefer square tips with rounded edges.
Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of hand soap. Soak your fingertips in the warm soapy water.
Apply cuticle softening cream to the cuticle on each fingernail. Gently massage the cuticle cream into the nail bed.
Wait 3 to 5 minutes, then use a cuticle stick to gently push back the cuticle on each fingernail.
Massage lotion into your hands. Wipe each nail dry with a clean cloth.
Apply a base coat to each fingernail. Apply two coats of your chosen nail polish. Finish up with a layer of top coat.
