How to Make a Halter Top Out of New Fabric
A halter top is a simple but flattering piece of clothing and you can easily make it yourself. (sexy woman in halter top image by MAXFX from Fotolia.com)

A halter top is a piece of clothing similar to a tank top but which has a single strap that wraps behind the neck, as opposed to two straps on each shoulder. A halter top is a feminine garment that tastefully bares skin, suitable for summer or spring. Because the garment is so lightweight, you layer other pieces of clothing over or under it quite comfortably. You can even wear it to work underneath a blazer or jacket and remove your outer layer of clothing after work for a night on the town. You can easily make a halter that fits you perfectly by using new fabric and sewing it yourself.

Instructions

  1. 1

Wrap the tape measure around your chest and add 3 to 4 inches. Cut an amount of fabric that is this wide. The length is completely up to you; you can make it as long or as short as you want.

  2. 2

Lay your cut piece of fabric in front of you with the patterned side face down. Lay your piece of elastic along the top horizontal edge of your fabric. Fold this top edge of fabric over the elastic, so that the elastic is concealed. Pin it in place.

  3. 3

Sew a seam that runs diagonally across the fabric, beneath the elastic. Remove the pins as you sew. Make another hem of equal length at the bottom of the fabric, parallel to the seam you have just sewn. Pin this hem in place. Sew this hem making small stitches that are close together.

  4. 4

Flip the piece of fabric over so that the patterned side is now face up. The fabric should still be laying horizontally in front of you. Pull the left side of the fabric neatly over to the right side of the fabric, folding the fabric in half. The vertical crease on the left side of the fabric will be one side of the halter.

  5. 5

Insert pins along the right side of the folded fabric, pinning the right and left ends together. Sew a vertical seam, stitching the two ends together. Remove the pins as you sew. When finished you will have a tube top with an elastic top end.

  6. 6

Cut two strips of different coloured fabric that are around 24 inches long and each 4 inches wide. Fold each strip in half vertically. Pin each in place.

  7. 7

Sew a seam vertically along each strip of fabric, removing pins as you go. Turn each strip right-side out. These will be the straps of your halter.

  8. 8

Pin one end of one of the straps under the top of the tube top, by your heart. Pin one end of the other strap under the top of the tube top, 6 inches to the right. You should pin 1 inch of each strap under the top.

  9. 9

Sew each strap in place making small, tight stitches. Gently tug on each strap when you are finished sewing. Each strap should feel firmly sewn in place. You can now slip on the halter, tying the straps around your neck.
