Suede is a type of leather that features a smooth, velvety surface. Commonly used for shoes, jackets and gloves, suede is durable and long-lasting. It is not uncommon, however, for water spots to form on your suede items, especially if you use them outdoors. Water spots on suede are unsightly and diminish the appearance of the entire item. You must remove water spots from suede the proper way so you do not damage the fabric in the process.

  1. 1

Let the water spots dry completely. Brush over the water spots with a suede brush, working back and forth in both directions of the nap. For light water spots, this may be all that is necessary, but if the water spots remain, additional techniques are necessary.

  2. 2

Rub the water spots with a pencil eraser. Brush the fabric in both directions of the nap until the spots are gone. Do not rub too hard or you may cause damage.

  3. 3

For stubborn water spots, wet down the entire suede item as a last resort. This doesn't remove the discolouration; rather it blends it in with the rest of the suede. Fill a spray bottle with water and lightly mist an even coating of water over the entire suede item.

  4. 4

Blot the suede with a dry cloth to remove excess moisture. Allow the suede to air-dry completely and the water spots will have blended in with the rest of the item.

Tips and warnings

  • Regardless of how you removed the water marks, always restore the nap by brushing the suede with a suede brush.
