Candles add a feeling of sophistication, ambience and warmth to a room. They bathe the walls in mystery and romance. Add scented candles or votives to the mix to take your candlelight experience to another level. A popular trend with home decor is to group or display numerous candles as a fireplace alternative. Placed on the hearth or inside the firebox, or simply on a table if no fireplace exists, the glow from your display can transform the mood of your next get-together.

  1. 1

Purchase a wide variety of candles. Make sure you choose varied heights. Select free-standing, thick or thin candles and tapers, then place into candle holders. Select a singular colour or similar hues for a cleaner design.

  2. 2

Stand a mirror at the back wall of the firebox or inside the mantel hole; this will magnify the flames and create the ambience of a fireplace.

  3. 3

Place floor tiles on the floor of your firebox to protect the floor or hearth. Arrange tiers of candles in varied candle holders several inches in front of the mirror. Place the candles in rows from tallest to shortest, starting at the back then tapering toward the front.

  4. 4

Light the candles, beginning in the back row, then continue to the front row until all candles are lit. The light of the candles will be repeated in the reflection of the mirror to create brilliant flames.

  5. 5

Extinguish the candles before they burn completely down. Stay in the room at all times with the candles, keeping them in your sight.

  1. 1

Position a table in the centre or corner of the room. Cover the top of the table with floor tiles to protect it from melted wax. Place a mirror on the tiles to magnify the candlelight and bounce it upward.

  2. 2

Place an assortment of candles in different sizes on the mirror. Place the tallest candles in the centre, and surround them in a circle with smaller candles.

  3. 3

Light the centre, tallest candles first, and then light the shorter candles until all the candles are lit.

  4. 4

Extinguish the candles before they burn completely down. Stay in the room at all times with the candles, keeping them in your sight.

Tips and warnings

  • Never leave lit candles unattended. Extinguish all candles when leaving the room.
  • Never burn a candle near anything that can catch fire, such as furniture, fabric, books or flammable objects. Never let pets or children near candles. Do not place candles in a place where they can be knocked over. Use candle holders solely designed to hold and burn candles. Make sure your candles are sitting on the heat-resistant tiles. Do not burn candles in drafts or near vents or ceiling fans. Burn candles in a well-ventilated room.
