How to get rid of a virus on my laptop
Keep your laptop safe from viruses. (virus alert image by dead_account from Fotolia.com)

Viruses are constantly attacking computers through the internet, even more so when you use a wireless network. To keep your laptop safe, frequently run virus scans, make sure your operating system is kept up to date and keep your firewall on. The firewall is the first line of defence against network viruses. Also, plenty of free virus protection exists, so do not think you have to purchase an expensive antivirus program to keep your laptop protected.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download and install a free antivirus program if you do not already have one. Trusted programs are AVG Free and eTrust.

  2. 2

Open your antivirus program and update it. On your program's homescreen there should be an "Update" button. This will update the virus library to ensure you have all the current information needed to trap potential viruses.

  3. 3

Run a scan. Click the "Scan" button. You might have to choose which drive to scan, so choose the "C" drive. Also, you want to do a "full scan" instead of a "quick scan" if your antivirus program has the option. This step can take anywhere from 20 minutes to one hour.

  4. 4

View the log at the end of the scan. The log shows all potential threats and viruses. Many programs will automatically move threats and a virus to a "virus vault" to keep it from spreading on your laptop. On some programs, you may have to manually select the viruses/threats and click a "Quarantine" or "Vault" button to get rid of it.
