Whether you are new to a community or just have a specific health care need, finding a hospital near you can seem like a daunting task. The many types of health care facilities---general hospitals, surgical hospitals, women's hospitals, hospitals that specialise in paediatric illnesses or mental health services---can make a search seem complicated. Professional organisations, government resources and specialised internet sites all provide tools to help simplify the search.

Instructions

  1. 1

Ask neighbours and friends. Word-of-mouth referrals are probably the easiest way to find a nearby hospital. Chances are good that among your network of friends, co-workers and neighbours, someone has had a need for similar health care services and can help you find a hospital.

  2. 2

Rely on state and national hospital associations. State hospital associations usually include among their members most local community and county general hospitals as well as speciality hospitals. The American Hospital Association provides a resource page on its website that allows you to locate your state's hospital association and then search for hospitals in your area, based on your needs. Although each state hospital association posts information in different ways, generally they all offer either a list of all hospitals in the state, a searchable directory or some combination of the two. Regardless of how they provide information on hospitals near you, all hospital associations provide telephone numbers, street addresses and websites for member hospitals.

  3. 3

Use internet search tools. Free internet search sites such as U.S. Hospital Finder or Hospital Connect Search feature online search tools that draw from databases of thousands of hospitals in the U.S. These kinds of sites allow you to perform a zip code search---locating hospitals near your zip code---or to search by state and then refine your search by city or community. Search results include full contact information of the hospitals near you, as well as website addresses so you can learn more about the clinical services available at each hospital.

  4. 4

Research government directories. The National Library of Medicine provides a complete list of directories of U.S. hospitals, segmented by category. Do you need to search for a general hospital, or a freestanding surgical centre? Are you searching for a hospital with specialised mental health services, or childbirth professionals? The National Library of Medicine's directory of directories will help you find a hospital near you that has the services you need.
