Water with high levels of calcium leaves a chalky, white residue called limescale when it evaporates. Although limescale is not harmful, it does leave your shower screen looking dirty, even after a good scrubbing. You can buy chemical cleaning products made specifically to remove limescale but these products often are unnecessary. Before resorting to harmful chemicals, try some white vinegar and a little elbow grease to remove limescale residue.

  1. 1

Clean the shower screen as you normally would to remove dirt and scum.

  2. 2

Pour a mixture of white vinegar and water into a spray bottle. Depending on the amount of limescale build-up, you can use a 1 to 5 ratio of vinegar to water or vinegar alone.

  3. 3

Place paper towels against the screen and spray it with the vinegar or the vinegar and water solution until the towels stick to the screen. You can tape the towels to the screen if they keep slipping. Tape the top edge of the paper towel to the top of the screen and tape the top of the next towel to the bottom of the one above it. Let the towels soak the glass wall for about 30 minutes or longer for more stubborn stains. Periodically spray the towels if they start to dry out.

  4. 4

Remove the towels and scrub the limescale deposits with a sponge or a scrub brush. Repeat steps 2 through 4 if needed.

  5. 5

Clean the shower screen as you normally would once all the limescale is gone.

Tips and warnings

  • Avoid future limescale build-up by wiping up any remaining water immediately after using the shower.
