Making a dress for a Barbie doll is just like a making a dress for a person, except on a much smaller scale. Designing and sewing a dress for a Barbie is a great way to teach your child how to sew. The amount of time and effort you will have to put into making the dress depends on what style you pick. Create a simple sundress to start, and then move on to sewing fancy gowns and Barbie wedding dresses later.

Things you need
- Barbie doll
- Measuring tape
- Fat quarter (22 inches by 18 inches) of fabric
- Sewing machine
- Disappearing ink pen
- 1/4-inch wide sew-on Velcro
- 1 size 4/0 snap
- Hand sewing needle
- 1/8-inch wide ribbon (optional)
Measure the Barbie doll. She is usually 11.5 inches high with a 6 inch bust, 3.75 inch waist and 5 inch hip, but you should check to make sure. In addition to measuring her bust, waist and hip, measure the length from the top of her chest to her mid-thigh.
Draw the dress pattern on a sheet of newspaper. You can either make a straight-cut sundress or an A-line dress. If you want a straight dress, simply draw a rectangle using the bust and length measurements. If making an A-line dress, make the top of the dress the bust measurement. Draw two lines straight down from the top line. These should be the length from her chest to mid-thigh. Draw the bottom line to form a rectangle, and then extend the bottom line out one-half inch on each side. Connect the ends of the top line to the ends of the bottom line to form a trapezoid.
Cut out the pattern. Pin it to the fabric and cut out one piece.
Fold the top edge of the fabric over 1/8 of an inch and press. Fold over another 1/8 of an inch, press and pin in place. Stitch along the edge. Repeat this process, sewing the sides and bottom edge of the fabric.
Wrap the fabric around the Barbie. Use a disappearing ink pen to mark where you will position a small snap at the top of the dress.
Cut a length of Velcro to fit the back of the dress. Sew both sides of the Velcro to opposite sides of the dress. Sew the size 4/0 snap onto the dress by hand. Wrap the dress around Barbie again and snap and Velcro it closed.
Add straps to Barbie's dress if you wish. Measure over her shoulder, from the top her dress in the back to the top of her dress in the front. Cut two pieces of ribbon and carefully sew each piece to the front and back of her dress.
