  1. 1

Prepare the string mop. Remove any metal pieces from the mop. If the mop has been used to clean, clean the mop thoroughly, and allow it to dry before you make a mop head doll from it.

  2. 2

Cut six strings from the inside centre of the mop. You will use these to tie off the arms, legs and head of the doll. Cut the strings from the inside centre where it will not be noticed.

  3. 3

Lay the mop on a table. Untangle the strings with your fingers. Trim the ends of the strings if necessary.

  4. 4

Determine where the neck of the mop head doll will be. Tie one of the cut strings around all of the strings to form the head and neck. Knot the string at the back.

  5. 5

Form the doll's arms. Determine how thick the arms should be. Separate the desired number of strings (at least three) from each side of the body to form the arms.

  6. 6

Braid the separated strings on one side to form an arm. Tie the braid at the bottom with one of the cut strings. Fashion the other arm in the same way. Cut off any excess string.

  7. 7

Tie a string around the waist of the doll. Separate the strings below the waist into two bunches that will form the legs of the doll. Tie one of the cut strings around one of the legs at the point where the doll's ankle should be. Repeat this step to create the other leg. Cut off any excess string from the ankle ties.

  8. 8

Add yarn hair to the doll with a hot glue gun. Some doll makers do not add features to the face of the doll. If you want to add features to the face, sew or glue on eyes and a mouth.

  9. 9

Lay fabric over the doll's body. Cut the fabric around the doll's body allowing a quarter inch seam. Sew the fabric together to form clothes onto the doll. Embellish the doll with ribbon, lace, beads or flowers.

Tips and warnings

  • If you want a rag doll face, make a simple stuffed head with an embroidered face out of muslin and attach it to the doll.
  • Supervise children when they use the hot glue gun.
