The lightsaber is one of the most iconic props from the Star Wars films and no homemade Jedi costume would be complete without one. One of the good things about building your own lightsaber, as opposed to some other parts of a Star Wars costume, is that you can customise the look of your lightsaber to your own personal tastes. That means that other than general look of the piece, the entire design is up to you. And it's a fairly quick and straightforward process.

Things you need
- PVC piping
- Small saw
- Silver screws
- Bathroom sink plug
- Hobby knife
- Model glue
- Spray paint
- Masking tape
- Plastic tubing
Take your piece of PVC pipe and use the saw to cut it down to the about six inches.
Use the model glue to glue any of the custom pieces (silver screws, square or rectangular buttons, etc.) onto the lightsaber. Be sure to leave room on the hilt so your hands can easily wrap around it.
Glue the edges of a rubber sink plug and insert it into one end of the lightsaber. This will form the bottom end of the weapon. If the sink plug is too big and won't fit, use the hobby knife to cut its edges down to size.
Coat your lightsaber with spray paint of your desired colour and wait for it to dry. Place masking tape over any parts of the sabre you don't want painted and remove when the paint is dry.
Insert a piece of long plastic tubing (available from most hardware stores) into the open hole at the end of the sabre. Make sure the tubing is just big enough to fit snugly in the end of the sabre. You can purchase coloured tubing or spray paint it the colour of your choice. This will form the blade of the lightsaber and can be removed easily if you want to hang it from a belt.
Tips and warnings
- Lay a photo of the lightsaber you intend to make on your workspace and refer to it throughout the building process to make sure you get the details right. There are plenty of photos of lightsabers online but you can bypass using a photo if you intend to completely design your own lightsaber from scratch.
