If you are obsessed with the U.S. stock markets and need to have up-to-the-minute quotes on your desktop, there are a few applications you can look into. They will give you real-time quotes on indexes as well as stocks. This way, you can keep track of your portfolio without ever having to log in to your brokerage account. Download one of several desktop stock-ticker applications, including Desktop Ticker, CoolTick and Free Stock Ticker (see Resources). As of 2010, these are all free of charge.

  1. 1

Get Desktop Ticker. This tool can not only stream stock prices, but it can also provide news feeds from around the world from organisations such as Reuters, CNN and the BBC. The appearance is completely customisable, and you can change colours and font size. In addition to news, it can also connect to social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Flickr.

  2. 2

Get Cool Tick. This application is a simple, unobtrusive tool that can be put at the top or the bottom of your desktop. You can enter your stock ticker along with a price alert that will tell you when a specific price has been hit; or, tell it to give you visual alerts and pop up messages for stocks that you want to keep an eye on. This also has customisable colours and fonts, and you can also control the scroll speed of the symbols.

  3. 3

Get Free Stock Ticker. This program allows you to track your stocks in real time, and will provide you with scrolling quotes across the top or bottom of your screen. In addition to being able to customise fonts and colours, it also has five different available skins. You can get detailed information about stock price such as the open, close, high and low, as well as details about the company itself. It is integrated with Yahoo! Finance, so it will also provide you with the latest news on the stock when you click on the ticker symbol.
