Google Maps is a Web-based product offered by Google that users generally use to search for addresses and find driving directions. However, you may encounter situations in which an address is not available. For example, some public parks are listed online with GPS coordinates rather than an address, as are the locations used in the hobby of geocaching. You can search for a set of GPS coordinates on Google Maps to see pictures and driving directions for that location.

  1. 1

Open a Web browser and navigate to the Google Maps search page (See Resources).

  2. 2

Enter the GPS coordinates that you want to search for in the text box at the top of the window. You may enter the coordinates using the format "35.283130,149.113580" or "N 19° 43.370 W 155° 04.053", such as at the official Geocaching website.

  3. 3

Click the "Search Maps" button at the top of the screen. The map will zoom in on the coordinates that you have entered.

Tips and warnings

  • If the GPS coordinates that you want to search for are in a format not supported by Google Maps, use the GPS Latitude and Longitude Converter to convert them. Enter the coordinates that you have using the "Degrees/Minutes/Seconds," "GPS Coordinate" or "Decimal Degrees" boxes, and then click "Calculate." Copy and paste the results into the Google Maps search box.
  • You can also extract the GPS coordinates for any location using Google Maps. Type an address to go directly to a location. Right-click the portion of the map that you want to extract the coordinates for, and then click "What's Here." The GPS coordinates will appear in the search box at the top of the window.
