How to Open Nikon RAW Files
You need a special picture reader to open Nikon RAW files. (suppenhuhn image by Silvia Bogdanski from Fotolia.com)

Nikon digital cameras store pictures not only in the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format, but also in the RAW format. Nikon RAW files contain little coding, no compression and require a special file viewer for processing. RAW files let you decide what to remove and the level of compression you want to use. After opening and making changes to your Nikon camera's RAW files, you can save the files in another format, including Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) or JPEG.
