How to glue plastic trim board
Plastic trim board is more durable than wood trim. (house image by Brett Bouwer from

Plastic trim board is made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a durable resin that withstands the outdoor elements well. Plastic trim board is used on the exterior of a home or building, especially in humid climates where wood trim deteriorates faster. It looks just like wood trim and often has an artificial wood grain imprinted on the surface. Gluing the joints of the plastic trim board, where two ends meet, provides a long-lasting, waterproof seal.

  1. 1

Lay two pieces of plastic trim board next to each other on a flat surface.

  2. 2

Unscrew the top from a can of PVC cement. Use the brush attached to the handle to apply 1/2 tsp of cement to the end of each trim piece you want to connect.

  3. 3

Spread the glue out into a thin layer, using the brush. Use only enough cement to cover the edge and remove the excess with the brush.

  4. 4

Push the ends of the two pieces of plastic trim board together as tightly as possible.

  5. 5

Wipe off any cement that oozes out of the joint with a damp rag.

  6. 6

Insert a clamp along the edge of the trim so that it overlaps both pieces and holds them firmly against each other. Allow the PVC cement to dry for at least five minutes.

  7. 7

Remove the clamp. Repeat the process to glue any remaining pieces of plastic trim together.

Tips and warnings

  • Use PVC cement made for plastic trim rather than traditional PVC cement used in plumbing. The type made for plastic trim does not dry as quickly, which allows you to wipe up mistakes.
  • If you are attaching the trim at a 90-degree angle, cement it together first and then insert pocket screws into the trim just as you would with wood trim.
