How to clean colored tile grout

Updated February 21, 2017

Coloured grout adds a unique touch to ceramic tile in the shower, bathroom, kitchen or floor. Grout colours range from ivory to jet black. Whether premixed or stained, coloured grout requires special care. Even when sealed, it has a tendency to fade with harsh cleaners such as bleach and abrasives. Use a gentle combination of household items like baking soda and vinegar to clean and maintain the coloured grout between your tiles.

Mix 3/4 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup water in a container. Stir it with a spoon to make a paste.

Fill a spray bottle with 1/2 cup white vinegar.

Apply the baking soda paste to the coloured grout using a toothbrush. Make more paste as needed.

Spray the coloured grout with vinegar and then let the solution sit for 5 to 10 minutes.

Scrub the grout with the toothbrush.

Rinse the grout with clean water on a cloth, on a damp mop or from a shower head.

Dry the grout with a clean cloth.
