Split ring pliers are used to open metal split rings that are used on key chains, fishing lures and in some types of jewellery. If you have ever tried opening a key chain ring to remove a key, you know that separating the metal ring can be tricky. Split ring pliers closely resemble needle-nose pliers, but have a special hook at the end. The hook makes opening the ring much quicker than using your fingers.

Open the jaws of the pliers as far as they will go. Turn the pliers so that the hooked jaw is on the top.
Pick up a key chain or other object that has a metal split ring. Turn the ring to a section that has two rings side by side. Do not turn it to the short section where there is only one metal ring.
Insert the ring into the small notch on the bottom jaw of the pliers.
Squeeze the handles of the pliers with one hand slowly while still holding the split ring with the other. As you close the handles, the top hook on the pliers will slide in between the two metal rings and separate them.
Slide a key, bead or other object either on or off of the split ring and then release your grip on the handles to close the ring back up.
