Invasions of privacy are commonplace since spy devices like video cameras are small enough to be unobtrusive and nearly invisible to the naked eye. You can make sure that you are not being surreptitiously videotaped by a hidden video camera in your home by using a laser detector. The commercially made laser-detector device emits a laser beam that reflects off the lens of any video device, no matter how it has been hidden. You can also scan your house for hidden listening devices without needing specialised or trained personnel, because an audio detector device, either built into the laser detector or purchased separately, will help you to find any hidden audio bugs that might have placed in your home.

Stand at the doorway or entrance to the room or location that you want to scan for hidden video spy equipment. Slide the selector switch on the side of the laser detector to the "Video" setting.
Look through the viewfinder of your laser detector.
Slowly scan the room with the laser detector, including the ceiling and the floor.
Stop scanning when you see a bright blinking light, which is the laser beam from the device bouncing off of the lens of a hidden camera.
Approach the blinking light and examine the area where you saw it to find the hidden camera.
Return to the doorway or entrance to the room or location that you want to scan for hidden audio spy equipment. Slide the selector switch on the side of the laser detector to the "Audio" settings. Slide the volume switch on the side of the laser detector to "Audible."
Rotate the knob at the top of the laser detector until a green LED begins to flash.
Slowly walk into the room or location while sweeping the laser detector back and forth in front of you. Walk in the direction that is indicated when an additional green LED begins to flash.
Continue walking in the direction that causes more green LEDs to flash. Stop walking when all of the LED's on the top of the laser detector are flashing. Inspect the area to find the hidden audio spy equipment that is there.
