How to get rid of cat urine from carpet

Cat urine on carpet is a disturbing sight. Not only will cat urine leave a spot on your carpet if left untreated, the strong odour of the urine will permeate the entire room. The ammonia in cat urine gives it a distinct smell that will linger if not cleaned promptly. It is important to clean cat urine from carpet carefully so the urine does not spread further. You can use common household products to remove cat urine stains and odours from your carpet.

Soak up the puddled urine from the carpet. Use old rags and firmly blot the urine spot. Work from the outside of the urine puddle towards the centre to prevent the urine from spreading.

Fill an empty spray bottle with equal parts cool water and white vinegar. Saturate the urine stain with this water and vinegar mixture.

Blot the stain again with old rags to soak up some of the moisture from the mixture. Let the remaining solution sit on the carpet until it has almost dried. This may take several minutes to more than an hour depending on the size of the urine stain.

Sprinkle a liberal amount of baking soda onto the urine-stained carpet. Then, mix 1/4 cup of hydrogen peroxide and 1 tablespoon of dish soap into a cup. Drizzle the mixture on top of the baking soda.

Use an old toothbrush to work the baking soda and peroxide mixture into the carpet. Let the mixture dry completely into a powder onto the carpet, then vacuum up the powder.

Warning

Always test the cleaning products you are using on a small spot on the carpet prior to applying it to a more noticeable area to make sure it does not damage the carpet.
