A marriage license acts as proof of marriage between two people. Requirements to apply for a marriage license differ from one state to another. Applicants must visit their respective county authorities for details. If you notice an error in your marriage license, you will have to contact the same county authorities for necessary amendments. Certain amendment steps may differ in each state.

Visit your local county authority. Once you notice that the name on your marriage license is incorrect, you must contact your county office immediately. You will be able to acquire in depth information concerning what you are required to present to the office as well as any fee you will be required to pay. You can also get information online by visiting your state's official website.

  2. 2

Provide a copy of your birth certificate. Your county office requires it to confirm your correct name. Most county offices will only accept a certified copy of your birth certificates. Photocopies are not permitted in most cases.

Provide a notarised request form. The county office will require a notarised request from you and your spouse indicating that both of you agree to amend the incorrect name on the marriage license. Ideally, a notarised request will contain you and your partner's names, date and county in which the marriage took place, and a description of the incorrect name amendment. You must also indicate your state and county, and the request must be signed by you and your spouse complete with dates.

Pay amendment fees. The fees usually range from £9 to £13. You will also have to pay from £9 to £19 as a fee for a certified copy of the marriage license. The amount payable may differ in each state. These fees are payable via credit card or money order.

Obtain your marriage license. The amount of time you are likely to wait before getting your amended copy will depend on the state in which you made the application. Generally though, the State Bureau of Vital Statistics and Registration has to review and approve the correction before the county office can make any changes and issue the amended copy.
