The Sony PlayStation 3 is a home video game console that uses Sony firmware as its operating system. Sony frequently updates the firmware to add (or remove) features from the console. If you decide to skip out on the update, you cannot play your games online. There is one trick you can do to bypass the update check, and that is to use a proxy server.

Turn on your Sony PS3 and select "Network Settings" from the PS3 main menu.
Select "Network Connection" and select your connection when it appears. Select "Custom" for the DNS server settings.
Change the primary DNS IP address to "18.104.22.168" and press the "X" button to verify the new settings.
Press the "X" button once more to test the connection. You can now go online to play your PS3 online without updating the firmware.
