Upon purchasing your BMW X3 sport utility vehicle, you may have been given the option to include factory-installed navigation. If you decided against this, you can still use a portable GPS device. These devices are generally more affordable than factory-installed navigation and provide the same features, such as spoken directions and detailed street maps. After choosing a GPS for your X3, it may be installed in several minutes.

Choose a method of mounting your GPS in the X3. Many GPS models come with a windshield mount. Clean the area of the windshield where you want to place the GPS with a damp cloth. Press the suction cup against the windshield and place the GPS in the mount. Adjust the mount's angle for better viewing.
You may also choose to use a dashboard mount. These mounts are used in the same way but they have no suction cup. Instead, peel off the paper on the back of the mount to expose an adhesive. Press the adhesive side of the mount against the dashboard to set it in place.
Charge the GPS with its included charging cable. Often, this cable is designed for use in your vehicle, although additional cables can be purchased allowing the GPS to charge at an electrical socket or computer.
Drive the X3 into a clear, open area so the GPS can acquire a satellite signal. This may take several minutes. When the GPS has a signal, it is ready to operate.
Make any desired changes to the GPS' settings. You may change the details that are shown on the map, for example, or set a preferred language or menu theme.
