Riding lawnmower racing is becoming an increasingly popular sport. There are a few basic adjustments that anyone can make to their riding mower engine to make it much faster. Riding mower engines come with a standard speed restriction to prevent the engine from running too fast. By removing the speed-restricting governor from your engine, you will void the warranty on the lawnmower engine.

  • New air filter
  • 92 octane gasoline

    Remove the metal shroud bolted over the top of your riding lawnmower engine's flywheel. Unscrew all the bolts tightened through the flywheel shroud and into the engine block with the proper sized sockets.

    Pull the flywheel shroud off. Locate the governor bolted next to the flywheel. The governor is a square plastic flap. Unscrew the bolt holding the end of the flap into the engine block with the correct sized socket. Slide the springs connected to the end of the governor flap out of the throttle linkage eyelets. Remove the governor flap and linkage.

    Place the shroud back on top of the engine and bolt it back into place.

    Locate the muffler on the front of the engine and firmly shake it. If it is loose at all, tighten the bolts holding it onto the engine block's exhaust port with the proper sized wrenches. A loose muffler prevents proper back pressure for the engine. Improved back pressure increases the engine horsepower.

    Remove the air filter cover. It will either be held on by a finger-tightened nut or a Phillips screw. Replace the old air filter with a new one as a dirty filter prevents proper airflow and maximum fuel burning.

    Fill the gas tank with 92 octane gasoline. High-octane gasoline burns much faster than standard 87 octane gasoline.
