Installing Microsoft Windows Spider Solitaire on an Ubuntu (Linux) system is a fairly simple task that can be performed by just about anyone. In order for it to be done, though, the Ubuntu system needs to have a Windows compatibility layer called Wine. This is needed because Ubuntu cannot run a Microsoft Windows executable (.exe) directly. Installing Wine is the first part of the process to get Spider Solitaire running.
Install Wine on Ubuntu. You have two alternatives: the Ubuntu Software Center and the Synaptic Package Manager. To use the Software Center, select Applications then Ubuntu Software Center. Use the search box in the upper right corner of the pop-up screen to find and install Wine. For the Synaptic Package Manager method, select System then Administration then Synaptic Package Manager. Then select the search option and enter \"Wine\" in the box. Scroll down to find the version of Wine listed for your version of Ubuntu. Accept all of the associated packages and install Wine. Any problems encountered when installing and running Wine for the first time (whichever method is chosen for the installation) can be resolved by referring to the Ubuntu documentation for Wine in the Resources section. (When using either of these methods, you will be assured of getting the correct version of Wine for your version of Ubuntu.)
Obtain a copy of spider.exe. It should be in C:WINDOWS\system32 of your Windows computer. The file (from XP) is 526kb (538,624 bytes) long. If you do not have a Windows computer, you can search for a copy of spider.exe on the Internet, but ensure that anything you download is the real program file and not a virus or Trojan horse.
Create a Windows games folder on your Ubuntu desktop. This is done by right-clicking anywhere on the desktop and selecting \"Create Folder.\" Replace the automatically generated name \"untitled folder\" with a meaningful name so that it is easy to find later. (In the future, you can put other simple Windows games that are popular in your home into the folder as well.)
Copy the spider.exe file to the Windows games folder.
Run Spider Solitaire. To do this, double-click the games folder you created then right-click on the spider.exe file. One of the options will be \"Open with Wine Windows Program Loader.\" Click on that, and Spider Solitaire will open for play.
Most simple Windows games can be installed on Ubuntu using this method.
Wine has some specialised tools developed for more advanced games. PlayOnLinux, linked in Resources, is a Wine front end developed for this purpose.
