How to Troubleshoot an Amana Refrigerator Ice Maker

Many Amana refrigerators feature ice makers, and the side-by-side models have the ice maker in the door. Problems with an Amana refrigerator ice maker are usually related to the ice maker producing too little or no ice, the ice cubes being too hollow or small and an off-taste or grey colour in the ice.

Instructions

  1. 1

Verify that the refrigerator is connected to the water supply. Look for a clear or brass tube running from the back of the refrigerator to the wall. It's distinct from the power supply cord, which is thinner. Make sure the valve at the wall is open. It should be in line with the tube.

  2. 2

Look for kinks in the water line and straighten the tube if the ice maker isn't producing enough ice. Keep the freezer door closed completely.

  3. 3

Open the water valve at the wall completely if the ice cubes are hollow or small. Again, look for kinks in the water line. Change any filters.

  4. 4

Discard the ice and clean the Amana refrigerator ice maker bin if the ice tastes stale. Use airtight, moisture proof packaging for storing food, because the smells can get into the ice. Flush the water filter if you see grey discolouration in the ice--it's charcoal from the filter. Run the water for five minutes, discard the ice and try again.

Tips and warnings

  • Allow enough time for the ice maker to produce ice. It can take twenty-four hours from ice maker installation, or after removing a lot of ice.
