A faulty speed sensor on the Jeep Grand Cherokee must be replaced--the unit is sealed and cannot be opened for repair. The speed sensor reads the speed and position of the tone ring on the axle, sending the information to the computer for processing. The computer uses that information to properly adjust the function of the anti-lock brake system on the Jeep. Replacement sensors are available through Jeep dealers.

Ensure that the ignition switch on your Grand Cherokee is on the off position. If not, turn it off and remove the key.
Loosen the front lug nuts on the side of the Jeep that you will be replacing the sensor on, using a lug wrench. Do not take them off the wheel studs yet.
Position a jack under the front of your Jeep and raise it until the tires are off the ground. Position a set of jack stands under the front axle tube to support the vehicle, then remove the jack. Remove the lug nuts, then remove the tire from the Jeep.
Locate the speed sensor inside the steering knuckle. The sensor is bolted in and sits next to the tone ring on the axle. Remove the bolt from the sensor with a socket and ratchet, then pull the sensor out of the knuckle.
Follow the cable on the sensor all the way up to the body until you locate the wiring harness connector where the cable meets the Jeeps wiring harness. Separate the connector halves, and remove the sensor and cable from the Jeep.
Install the new sensor in the steering knuckle using the bolt from the old sensor. Tighten the bolt with a socket and ratchet. Route the cable up to the wiring harness connector, and push the two halves together until they snap into place.
Replace the tire on the wheel studs, then install the lug nuts. Position a jack under the front of the Jeep and raise it off the jack stands. Remove the stands from under the Jeep then lower the jack, carefully setting the Jeep on the ground.
