Plasma televisions use phosphor to generate images. Phosphor has been used for decades in tube TVs, and like those sets, plasmas can suffer from image retention. This is caused by pausing or leaving a high-contrast image on screen for an extended duration, without that image moving. Good examples are DVD menus and computer desktops. Fortunately, a process called "scrubbing" is surprisingly effective at removing the ghost lines that are left when the phosphor needs evening out. A basic DVD player and DVD containing a 100-per cent-white field test pattern downloaded from the internet can go a long way.

Connect the DVD player to any available input on the plasma set, using RCA cables or another type of connection.
Select the input used by the DVD player, using either the remote control or the television's controls. Turn on the DVD player, and insert the DVD containing the 100-per cent-white field test pattern.
Set the television's contrast control to maximum, using either the remote or the TV's controls to set. Leave the white field pattern on screen for 24 hours, or until the ghost lines have dissipated.
