How to Replace RAM on a Dell Inspiron 1520

Dell Inspiron 1520 laptops can be easily upgraded by installing RAM. Another reason to replace RAM in your Dell Inspiron 1520 is to replace a faulty memory module. Dell Inspiron 1520 laptops will recognise up to 2 GB of memory. Dell Inspiron 1520 laptops have two sections to install memory; one near the hinge cover and one on the back of the laptop. RAM can be installed in both slots or in the hinge cover slot only.

Instructions

    DIMM A Slot (Hinge Area)

    Turn off your Dell Inspiron 1520 and disconnect if from the power source.

    Turn the laptop over and slide the battery latch to release the battery. Set the battery to the side.

    Turn the laptop back over.

  4. 4

    Open the display as far as possible.

  5. 5

    Insert the plastic scribe or a small plastic pry tool into the indention on the right side of the hinge cover. Slide the scribe left and right to loosen and lift the edge of the hinge cover, then remove the cover.

    Remove the two screws at the top of the keyboard. Lift the keyboard slightly until you can reach the keyboard connector. Turn the keyboard connector latch upwards to release the cable, then slide the cable out of the connector.

    Lift the keyboard up to provide access to the memory modules. Lift the memory module cover, but do not remove it.

    Spread the memory module clips on either end of the connector until the memory module lifts up. Remove the module.

    Insert the new memory module firmly at a 45-degree angle until the clips snap into place.

    Replace the memory module cover.

    Insert the keyboard cable into the keyboard connector. Rotate the connector downwards to secure the cable.

    Hook the tabs at the top of the keyboard and press on the right edge to snap into place.

    Replace the screws holding the keyboard in place.

    Align the tabs on the hinge cover with the notches in your Dell Inspiron 1520.

    Snap the hinge cover into place, starting with the left side.

    DIMM B Slot (Underneath Laptop)

    Follow steps 1 and 2 in the DIMM A section to prepare your laptop.

    Loosen the single screw holding the memory module cover in place and remove the cover. The memory module cover has a small vent section and is in the shape of a square.

    Spread the clips holding the memory module in place. Pull to remove the RAM module.

  4. 4

    Insert the new RAM, or memory module, into the slot at a 45-degree angle until the clips snap into place.

    Replace the memory module cover.

  6. 6

    Tighten the single screw.

  7. 7

    Insert the battery until it snaps into place.

Tips and warnings

  • Keep all screws with their respective parts for easy replacement of parts.
  • You must install a memory module in the DIMM A slot before installing a second in the DIMM B slot.
