How Can I Clean My Dyson Canister?

Updated November 21, 2016

Dyson canister vacuums may look different from their upright counterparts, but the basic care and maintenance required is nearly the same. You still need to empty the dust bins on your Dyson canister when they become full to ensure optimal performance each time you clean. In addition to emptying the dust bins, you also need to clean the filters occasionally to remove the dirt, dust, pet hair and other debris that will accumulate over time.

Turn off your Dyson canister vacuum and unplug the cord from the electrical socket. This will prevent electrical shock while you clean the device.

Press the red button on the back of the canister and pull the dust bin up and away from the machine while the button is depressed.

Hold the dust bin over a dustbin and press the button located on the top of the bin. This will open the bottom of the bin and release the contents into the dustbin.

Press the button located on the side of the dust bin to release the clear plastic part from the rest of the unit. Pull this plastic part straight down to remove it completely from the bin and expose the filters.

Wipe the filters, still attached to the base of the dust bin, with a clean, dry cloth. Do not use a wet cloth or any type of liquid because it could damage the canister vacuum cleaner.

Rinse the clear plastic part of the dust bin under running water to remove all dirt and dust. This is the part of the dust bin that you removed in Step 4.

Slide the clear plastic part of the dust bin back into place when it is completely dry.

Lift the lifetime filter and plastic filter case out of the top of the canister. This filter and case are located directly underneath the area where the dust bin attaches to the vacuum cleaner.

Lift the foam filter out of the plastic case and shake both pieces over a dustbin to remove as much dirt and dust as possible.

Rinse the plastic case and the foam filter in cold water. Do not use hot water or any type of detergent to wash these components.

Place the filter inside the filter case and return it to the canister vacuum when both pieces are completely dry.

Return the dust bin to the vacuum cleaner.

Clean the lifetime filter on your Dyson canister approximately every six months.
