  1. 1

Place a plastic tarp underneath the rug to protect the floor around it. This will help to prevent spreading the dirt to other surfaces.

  2. 2

Brush the fringe with a soft- to medium-bristle brush to remove loose dirt, dust and debris.

  3. 3

Add 1 tbsp of ammonia to 236ml of warm water.

  4. 4

Dip a cloth or sponge into the solution and wring it out well.

  5. 5

Wipe down the fringe with the cloth or sponge, taking care to dampen every piece of fringe.

  6. 6

Add 1 tbsp of white vinegar to 236ml of warm water.

  7. 7

Rinse the fringe with a separate clean cloth or sponge dipped into the vinegar and water solution.

  8. 8

Allow the fringe to air dry. Place a fan nearby to circulate air over the fringe to help it dry more quickly.

Tips and warnings

  • If the fringe still looks dirty after cleaning, consult a professional rug cleaning service.
  • Do not attempt to vacuum the fringe, as this may destroy both the fringe and the vacuum cleaner.
