You cannot use your iPod without the earphones. Unfortunately the earphones can be damaged many ways. They can get caught in a door, chewed up by pets, or tangled up and ripped. You could pay for a new pair or you can fix them at home. Fixing your iPod earphones is a great idea if you are a person who seems to always find a way to break your earphones.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

Things you need

  • Electrical tape

  1. 1

Cut the wires at the ends. The ends of your earphone wires might be twisted and disorderly. You are going to be connecting these wires to each other. Cutting the ends of the severed wires will clean up the wires and give you a clean area to connect the ends together. Cut as little as possible so you don't lose much wire length, but make sure to cut enough so that all the twisted, matted wire is gone.

  2. 2

Strip both sides of the wires. Take the wire stripper and look at the stripping holes. Select a hole that will make enough contact to hold the wire but will not cut it in half. Once you've found the correct stripping hole, insert the wire two inches from the spot of the cut and pull the wire strippers toward the cut end. This will strip the outside casing. When the casing is off you will notice that each wire contains two little wires inside. These wires will have to be stripped as well. Repeat this step on the inside wires.

  3. 3

Separate the little wires. Fold the red and white wires in opposite directions. It's OK if they make contact during this process. It's important that these wires do not touch each other when you tape the wires together.

  4. 4

Tape the little wires together. Hold the wire ends face to face so that the black casings under the exposed wires are close together. Bend the two red wires to the left and bend the two white wires to the right. Twist the red wires together and then twist the white wires together. Cover the twisted red wires with electrical tape to make sure the wires are completely covered and then do the same with the white wires.

  5. 5

Bend the red wires all the way down to the left and the white wires down to the right. One grouping of wires should be flat against one end of the big wire and the other grouping should be against the other end. Hold the wires securely in place and tape them flat against the big wire. The earphones should look like one continuous wire with a slight bulge in the middle.

Tips and warnings

  • Since you are working with little wires, be careful not to use too much force when stripping the wire.
