Instructions

    Determine the Amount of Material

  1. 1

Use the tape measure to figure out the length, width and depth of the mattress. Find the length by measuring the top of mattress vertically from edge to edge; add 1.5 inches for seams. Find the width by measuring the top of the mattress horizontally from edge to edge; add one inch for seams. Find the depth by measuring the side of the mattress and box spring vertically from edge to edge; add 1.5 inches for seams.

  2. 2

Calculate the amount of material needed for the gathered skirt using this calculation: (2 x Length + Width).

  3. 3

Buy fabric according to the finished calculations.

    Make the gathered skirt

  1. 1

Fold the lower edge of the skirt upward to make a half-inch hem; fold it again to make a double hem and pin it.

  2. 2

Fold the shorter edges of the skirt to make a half-inch hem; fold them twice to make a double hem and pin. Stitch the hem on three sides and press.

  3. 3

Make two rows of gathering threads along the top edge.

  4. 4

Pull the gathering threads so the skirt fits the sides and bottom edges of the main section minus two inches.

    Make the Fitted Bedspread

  1. 1

Stitch the two pieces of interlining together by hand using a herringbone stitch. Stitch the interlining to the backside of the main piece of fabric using a lock stitch.

  2. 2

Turn the main material and skirt so that the right side of the materials are facing one another. Put the edges of both pieces of material together and pin the skirt to the sides and bottom of the main piece. Leave a one-inch allowance for seams at the top edge.

  3. 3

Stitch the skirt to the top edge of the main piece of fabric. Leave a half inch from the edge.

  4. 4

Place the bedspread on a flat surface with the skirt folded inward. Place the lining on the top with the wrong side facing upward. Pin and stitch the edges of the materials together around three sides.

  5. 5

Turn the bedspread right side out through the hole on the top edge and press the material. Fold the open edges at the top one inch and slip stitch them together.
