The Acrobat line of Portable Document (PDF) creating and editing programs from Adobe Systems are some of the most popular of their kind. Each program, Standard, Pro and Pro Extended, offers an increasing level of features. Between Standard and Pro Extended, the features become more comprehensive. Many of the features involve editing existing PDF appearance and content, such as a document's background colour. You can darken a page in Adobe Acrobat by following a few steps.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download and install one of the Adobe Acrobat programs. While Acrobat Pro is used in the process outlined in the steps that follow, the same applies to all versions of Acrobat. The software can be expensive, running anywhere between £64 and £455, so try the free download of Pro from the Adobe site (see Resources).

  2. 2

Open the PDF document that contains the pages you want to darken. Launch the "Open" dialogue box by clicking once on the "Open" button. Use the "Look in" menu to access the folder in which the PDF is saved. Click once on the file name and once on the "Open" button to launch the file.

  3. 3

Click once on the "Document" drop-down menu and select "Background" to launch a menu of options to the right. Click once on the "Add/Replace" option to launch the "Add Background" dialogue box. Click once on the box next to the "Form Color" category to launch a box with available colour options. Select a colour or use the "Other Color" option to create a custom colour. The colour you select will become the background colour of the PDF.

  4. 4

Use the "Opacity" category in the "Appearance section to adjust the darkness of the colour you selected. You can click once on the arrow on the bar and drag it left or right while holding down the mouse button. You may also use the up and down arrows in the percentage field to the right. The level of darkness will be reflected in the "Preview" section in the right portion of the "Add Background" dialogue box. When you have selected the appropriate darker colour for your document, click once on the "OK" button. Remember to save the changes using the "Save As" option under the "File" drop-down menu.
