Although you can view and print PDF files with Adobe Reader, you can only create, manage and manipulate PDF files if you have Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer. One manipulation that you can do with a colour PDF in Acrobat is convert it to black and white. You might want to change a PDF to black and white for aesthetic reasons or if you're working in an environment -- such as some newspaper organisations -- that only accepts black and white documents.

Skill level:
Moderately Easy

  1. 1

Open the Adobe Acrobat program on your computer and open the colour PDF file that you would like to convert to black and white.

  2. 2

Click on the "Advanced" menu, select "Print Production" and then click on "Preflight."

  3. 3

Click on the "Convert to grayscale" option listed under "PDF fixups" and select "Analyze and Fix," located in the bottom right corner of the window.

  4. 4

Name the file and save it to a location of your choice.
