The HP 6310 is one of the widely used all-in-one printers in the Officejet series. It lets you print, copy, scan and fax all from the same device. This printer may not be able to show you a correct reading of the ink levels if you plan on using third-party ink cartridges from stores like Office Depot, Staples and OfficeMax. This process will help you reset the cartridge ink levels to give you an accurate reading.

  1. 1

Look at the back of the new ink cartridge. You should see several contact holes with different colours.

  2. 2

Locate the blue contact holes. Place a piece of tape over it.

  3. 3

Insert the cartridge into the printer.

  4. 4

Click on the Start button and select "Control Panel." Double-click on "Printers." Locate HP 6310 in the list and right-click on it. Select "Properties." Click on "Open Toolbox." Select "Print a test page." You should get an error message both on your computer as well as your printer. Ignore and close down the message. Let it print off the test page.

  5. 5

Remove the ink cartridge from the printer. Peel off the tape. Place a fresh piece of tape over the red contact holes. Put the cartridge back into the printer. Print off another test page following the instructions in Step 4.

  6. 6

Remove the cartridge and peel off the tape. Place it back to the printer. Your ink levels should be reset.
