How to Make a Star Shape in Photoshop
Use Photoshop to make simple star shapes. (Star image by reises from Fotolia.com)

Adobe's graphic software package Photoshop is filled with intricate and extensive tools, filters and palettes to enhance photographs and artwork. But you can also use Photoshop to create simple designs as well, with just a few clicks of your mouse. One quick drawing you can make is a star shape; use it to create stickers for students' work, draw an image of the night sky or even make a replica of the American flag. With Photoshop, you can draw stars "freehand," which means as if you're using markers or paint on paper, or you can use a preset shape to get your star just right.

Instructions

    Freehand

  1. 1

Open Photoshop and select "File," then click "New" and set the width and height for the size of your star.

  2. 2

Double-click the "Paintbrush" tool in the "Tools" palette on the left side of the screen. If you don't see a paintbrush, look for a pencil, then right-click it and select the paintbrush. These tools all share the same space on the palette and remain in place until one is changed.

  3. 3

Change the "Brush" box on the top menu bar to the thickness you prefer for your star's edges. Double-click the top left box on the "Color Picker," which is the two overlapping squares on the "Tools" palette. Choose a colour for the star, then click the "OK" button.

  4. 4

Draw an upside down "V" with your cursor, which looks like a tee-pee without a bottom. Place your cursor on the bottom-right end of the tee-pee and drag your mouse up and to the left on a diagonal, stopping slightly lower than the top of the tee-pee. Drag your mouse in a horizontal, straight line to the right, crossing over both tee-pee lines. Finish the star by dragging your mouse down and to the left on a diagonal to meet the bottom left end of the tee-pee.

  5. 5

(Optional) Click the "Fill" tool, which looks like a tipping paint can. Click inside the white parts of the star to fill them with colour to form a solid colour star.

    With Tools

  1. 1

Open Photoshop and select "File," then click "New" and set the width and height for the size of your star.

  2. 2

Double-click the "Star" tool in the "Tools" palette on the left side of the screen. If you don't see a star shape, look for a line, rectangle or circle shape, then right-click it and select "Custom Shape Tool." These tools all share the same space on the palette and remain in place until one is changed.

  3. 3

Note the new toolbar at the top of the screen. Click on the star shape. Double-click the top left box on the "Color Picker," which is the two overlapping squares on the "Tools" palette. Choose a colour for the star, then click the "OK" button.

  4. 4

Hover your cursor on the white box, then press down on the mouse button and drag the mouse down and to the right. A star shape will appear and grow big as you drag your mouse; lift your finger up when the shape is set in place.
