There are many reasons why a person would need to change a mailbox key. The key could have been stolen or lost or you might have purchased a home from the bank and the keys were not passed on. Whether you live in a home you own or rent a house or apartment, here are some suggestions if you ever need to change a mailbox key.

    Get a quote from a locksmith. The locksmith can change the lock and get you a new key.

    Obtain the code on the back of the lock and the locksmith can cut you a key using this code.

    Shop for a new mailbox. If you don't want to pay the price a locksmith will charge, consider purchasing a new mailbox.

    Contact the building manager if you live in an apartment and they will give you a replacement key.

Tips and warnings

  • If you lose a key to a P.O. Box, the Post Office will not replace the key. They own the lock located at the top of the box. Individual keys are the owner's responsibility.
