How to Make Country Heart Garland
Hammered copper adds an interesting texture to your country-heart decor. (copper river image by Steve Mann from

Country style decor boasts a variety of heart motifs on everything from hand-painted furniture to knick-knacks. Create your own country-heart garland to drape along the mantle or hang over a doorway. Metal craft foils are simple to cut and manipulate into the size heart you need for your design. Select brass, aluminium or copper to create a strand of hearts to fill any space. Embellish the county design by hammering, embossing, stamping or painting to suit your existing decor.

  1. 1

Trace the outline of a heart template onto copper foil. Cut the foil around the heart outline with sharp scissors or tin snips.

  2. 2

Place the copper heart on a flat board. Insert one push pin into each side of the heart to secure it to the wood. Place the push pins across from each other at the widest section of the heart. Leave 1/8-inch of space from the edge of the heart to the push pin.

  3. 3

Strike the copper heart all over with a ball-peen hammer. The hammered copper effect fits in well with a country style decor. Remove the push pins after the heart is completely hammered.

  4. 4

Repeat steps 1 through 3 to make enough hammered copper hearts to create the desired length of the country garland.

  5. 5

Cut a 3/4-inch length of 24-gauge copper wire. Thread one end through one pushpin hole on one side of one copper heart. Thread a crimp bead over the end of the wire. Crimp the bead with crimping pliers. Thread the other end of the same wire through a pushpin hole on another hammered copper heart. Secure the wire in place by crimping a crimp bead. The two hearts are now connected.

  6. 6

Repeat Step 5 to connect all of the copper hearts to make the country garland.

Tips and warnings

  • Cut longer strips of wire to join the hearts so you can add wooden or hand-painted ceramic beads between each heart on the garland. The beads will add a new element and alter the design of the country-heart garland.
