How to Replace VW Side Marker Lights

Updated February 21, 2017

The side marker light or bumper light on a VW is located on each side of the front bumper. When the bulb for the light burns out, you will need to remove the side marker light to replace the bulb. You may also need to replace the marker light if the housing is damaged or if you want to upgrade to a different type of marker light. Replacing the marker light is an easy job and will not require any tools.

Push in on the back side of the housing of the marker light. You should feel it go into the bumper about ½ inch. This will force the front of the housing outward.

Pull at the front part of the housing by hand. Slide the housing towards the front of the vehicle to remove it from the bumper.

Unplug the wiring harness from the marker light housing and set the marker light aside.

Connect the wiring harness to the new marker light housing, then insert the slotted end of the marker light into the rear or back of the opening in the bumper.

Slide the marker light housing back into place and push it in to secure it to the bumper.

Repeat this process for the marker light on the other side of the vehicle if necessary.

Do not use sharp objects to try and pry out the marker light because you could scratch the paint on the bumper.
