Instructions

  1. 1

Insert a drinking glass into the water dispenser. If you can you hear the pump running when you press the paddle with the glass, the electrical and mechanical parts are working. This means that the problem is most likely due to a blockage.

  2. 2

Check the water filter. It is usually in the back of the refrigerator and typically will have a plastic cap labelled "water filter." You may need a flashlight to find it. Unscrew the cap and pull the water filter out. If the filter is dirty, you need to replace it. A dirty filter can cause a gradual drop in water output.

Open the door and examine the area behind the water dispenser. If the water lines in the door have frozen, water won't flow. Turn on the hair dryer to a medium or high setting. Apply warm air around the front and back of the dispenser. Continue alternating between the front and back of the door for several minutes. Check the dispenser to see if it starts working again. If not, the blockage may be deeper in the system.

Empty the refrigerator and freezer. Store your perishable items in coolers. Unplug the refrigerator, open the doors and allow the refrigerator to sit for 24 hours. Plug it back in and try the dispenser again. If the problem was a frozen line, allowing the appliance to thaw should have corrected it.
