Create a Barbie dress cake. (Doll cake image by Stokholm from

Bake a ball gown for Barbie to serve as a cake at any occasion. The classic fashion doll can play a centre roll in the preparation of a Barbie dress cake. This cake uses a glass mixing bowl for baking a cake which, when assembled, resembles a wide dress for the doll in the centre. Once the guests eat all the cake, the honoree can have the doll in the middle to add to her collection.

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 177 degrees Celsius and spray the inside of the glass bowl with baker's cooking spray. Alternatively, spread a thin coating of vegetable oil and lightly dust the interior of the bowl with flour to coat.

  2. 2

Pour the prepared cake batter into the bowl and bake for 35 to 50 minutes or until a knife inserted in the middle of the cake pulls out without crumbs or uncooked batter.

  3. 3

Let the cake cool for 10 minutes in the bowl before turning it out of the bowl onto a cake board to cool completely.

  4. 4

Dust a working surface with icing sugar and flatten out the fondant with a rolling pin to a 10-inch wide circle.

  5. 5

Cut a 2-inch circle out of the middle of the cake with the knife. Remove the cake from the top to the base along the hole to create the spot for the Barbie doll's legs.

  6. 6

Cut a 2-inch wide circle in the middle of the rolled fondant using the knife.

  7. 7

Drape the fondant over the cake, aligning the holes in the middle.

  8. 8

Arrange the fondant around the cake to create folds and pleats in the skirt of the dress, if desired. Trim any excess fondant from around the base of the cake by cutting it off with the knife.

  9. 9

Place the cake on a plate. Insert the Barbie doll's legs into the middle of the cake until its feet touch the plate. The only part of the doll that is visible over the cake is its top half, from the waist up.

  10. 10

Roll out the trimmings from the fondant to create a 4-inch wide circle. Mold this around the upper half of the Barbie doll to create the top of the dress.

  11. 11

Fill a piping bag with ½ can of frosting and attach a star tip to the end.

  12. 12

Press the sides of the piping bag with one hand while directing the tip with the other to apply a border of frosting to the base of the cake where the fondant meets the cake board.

  13. 13

Create another border around the waist of the Barbie doll to hide any remaining evidence of the cut hole in the middle of the cake and fondant.

  14. 14

Apply sugar flowers or candy bits by pressing them into the sides of the fondant to add more decorations to the cake if desired.

Tips and warnings

  • The following colour combinations would work well for the Barbie dress cake: pink fondant and white icing, light purple fondant and pink icing, white fondant and pink icing or the cake recipient's favourite colour combination.
