Filling an HP 56 cartridge yourself can save money. The refill kit has enough ink to refill one cartridge up to 10 times. The HP 56 ink cartridge fits the many different HP DeskJet models, HP OfficeJet models, HP PhotoSmart models and some HP PSC models. In some printer models, you will need to reset and refill the HP 56 cartridge so the printer recognises the newly refilled cartridge as new.

Instructions

    Refill the Ink Cartridge

  1. 1

Spread out a piece of newspaper. Remove the supplies from the refill kit. There will be one bottle of black ink and one syringe. Remove the label from the empty ink cartridge. The refill hole will be at the top of the cartridge.

  2. 2

Place the needle for the syringe in the bottle of ink. Pull up on the plunger to draw out 15ml of ink.

  3. 3

Place the needle into the refill hole as far down as you can get without forcing it. Slowly push down on the plunger to inject the ink into the sponge inside the cartridge. If the ink bubbles out, stop; the cartridge is full and may not have been completely empty. Wipe up any spilt ink with a damp rag.

  4. 4

Run three to four test pages to cycle the ink before resetting the ink level gauge.

    Reset the Ink Level Gauge

  1. 1

Remove the ink cartridge from the printer carriage. Flip the cartridge over so the bottom copper contacts are toward the bottom and the writing is at the top if you are looking at it.

  2. 2

Place a piece of tape over the top contact point in the second row on the left side. The first row has five contacts and the second row has seven contact points. The tape should be applied over the seventh contact point on the top. Place the ink cartridge back in the printer carriage. Allow the printer to perform an alignment page. Remove the cartridge from the printer carriage after the alignment.

  3. 3

Place a piece another piece of tape over the contact on the right side. The very last row of contacts has five contacts and the second to the last row has six contacts. Place the tape over the six contacts in the second to the last row on the right side of the ink cartridge.

  4. 4

Place the ink cartridge in the printer carriage and allow the printer to print out another alignment page. Remove the ink cartridge after the alignment is done. Remove both pieces of tape from the ink cartridge. Use a lint free cloth and some rubbing alcohol to remove any adhesive residual by lightly rubbing the contact.

  5. 5

Place the ink cartridge in the printer carriage and the ink level will be reset to show the correct ink level.
