You acquire an old dresser, but the insides of the dresser drawers have an unpleasant smell. Before using the dresser, get rid of the wood smell in dresser drawers so your clothing will not absorb these odours. Try one of several techniques to remove the odours and within a short time, your dresser will be ready to use and fill with clothing.

  1. 1

Remove all of the drawers from the dresser and place the dresser and the drawers in a location where they can air out for up to two weeks. Make sure each drawer is completely open to air circulation and that the location receives warm and dry air blowing through it. Leave the furniture to air out for the entire two-week period. Assess the furniture after it airs out to determine whether any odours remain. If odours remain, proceed with the next step.

  2. 2

Mix 2 tsp of wood soap with 1 gallon of warm water in the bucket. Saturate the rag with the soapy water and wipe every interior and exterior surface of the dresser and drawers with the soapy water. Make sure the rag is only damp as you wipe the dresser because saturating the wood with too much moisture may damage it.

  3. 3

Allow the dresser and drawers to dry completely. This may take several days, depending upon humidity levels.

  4. 4

Pour a small amount of citrus oil onto the clean cloth and apply the oil to every surface of the dresser and drawers. Cover every interior and exterior surface completely.

  5. 5

Allow the oil to penetrate into the wood for two to three days. After this time, the wood odours should be unnoticeable and the dresser should be ready to use.
