Updated March 23, 2017

Fluffy, colourful and easy to use, pom poms are an essential kids craft item. Pom poms can be stacked, sewn and glued for whatever a craft calls for. When it comes to Christmas crafts, poms poms are unrivalled for making rock canes, reindeer and even a creative Christmas wreath.

Christmas wreath

Cut the toilet paper rolls open with scissors. Cut the open rolls into wise strips 2.5 cm (1 inch) wide.

Paint the toilet paper strips green with the green paint and sponge brush.

Staple the dried strips at the bottom to form raindrop shaped loops.

Draw a circle with a 15 cm (6 inch) diameter out of the cardboard cereal box using the compass.

Draw another circle with a 7.5 cm (3 inch) diameter in the middle of the 15 cm (6 inch) circle.

Cut the middle circle out using scissors.

Cut strips of newspaper measuring 5 cm by 2.5 cm (2 inches by 1 inch) out and staple them to the edges of the ring. They should slightly overlap on each edge.

Paint the entire ring, front and back, green.

Fringe the edges of the newspaper with scissors and curl them by wrapping with around a pencil.

Glue the loops around the ring.

Glue the red pom-poms around the ring to look like berries.

Rock cane reindeer

Wrap a 7.5 cm (3 inch) piece of red pipe cleaner around the curve of the rock cane. Bend it in various directions to make it look like antlers.

Glue a green pom-pom to the top tip of the rock cane to look like a nose.

Glue two wiggle eyes, one on each side of the rock cane curve, just in front of the antlers.

Pom-pom snowman

Thread the needle with 60 cm (2 feet) of thread. Double the thread and tie a knot at the end.

Sew the white 3.7 cm (1 1/2 inch) pom-pom and two 2.5 cm (1 inch) pom-poms together.

Cut out a 2.5 cm (1 inch) diameter circle from the black felt. Sew this onto the snowman next.

Sew on a black pom-pom for the top of the hat and tie off the thread.

Cut a small triangle from the orange felt and glue it to the top white pom-pom for a nose.

Tie a piece of yarn between the two top white pom-poms for a scarf.

Paint two small dots for eyes and six small dots forming a mouth on the top white pom-pom using the fabric paint. Paint buttons down the front of the bottom two pom-poms also using the fabric paint.
