Kids will love making and displaying this 3-D bee craft. At home or in the classroom, kids will be buzzing with excitement as they see their bee crafts take shape. Painting the bee parts, stapling or taping pieces together, and adding accents, will help children with developing their fine motor skills. This kid craft will also help the children in learning to follow directions to complete their projects.
Spread newsprint in double layers on a work area.
Give each child eight paper plates. Lay the plates out onto the newsprint, with the bottom side of the plate pointing upward. Have kids paint the bottom side of each of the eight plates. Paint four plates black and four plates yellow.
Let painted plates dry completely before proceeding.
Show kids how to place two plates of the same colour together, with the painted side facing outward. Staple two plates of the same colour together to form bee body sections. There will be two yellow and two black bee body sections.
Stack the bee sections to form a tower. The colour order should be: yellow, black, yellow, black. Spread glue between each of the bee sections and restack, pressing each bee section gently onto the one under it. Let the glue dry to ensure that the sections are firmly secured.
Turn the bee so that the yellow section is at the top of the stack. This will be the bee's face. Glue two eyes onto the yellow bee face.
Give the kids each two black chenille stems. Show the kids how to bend the end of the stems slightly to look like feelers. Staple the two black feelers to the top of the bee's face section, just above the eyes.
Give each kid one black chenille stem. Show kids how to twist the stem around their fingers loosely to make a curly bee stinger-tail. Staple the stinger-tail to the last section of the bee, a black section.
This craft can be made more quickly if using a glue gun, as the glue dries almost instantly. Be sure to keep the children safe from the hot glue gun, and have plenty of adult help to keep the craft project moving smoothly and as quickly as possible.
