How to Build a Model House Out of Wood

Updated February 21, 2017

Many model building enthusiasts enjoy building model houses. One easy-to-work-with, inexpensive, and popular material to build a model house is wood. Even wooden house models can be as detailed or as simple as you want. For a simple wooden model house, you don't need a lot of experience or materials.

Measure your plywood for the dimensions you wish your house to be.

Divide one of the rectangular pieces of plywood into two, equal-sized squares using a pencil and a ruler.

Draw an "X" from corner to corner on one of the squares.

Draw a straight, vertical line, on the same square, which goes straight through the centre of the "X."

Draw a triangle, in the same square, which goes from the top of the vertical line, down to one of the corners of the inside corners of the square. Your rectangular piece of plywood should now look like a child's drawing of a house.

Cut out the outermost edges of the triangle you drew using a power saw. If a power saw is not available, use a hand saw. Once you've done this, your rectangular piece of plywood should look like a square with a triangle on top of it.

Repeat steps 2 through 6 on the second rectangular piece of thin plywood.

Attach one square piece of thin plywood to one of the rectangular pieces using wood glue. Clamp the pieces together until the glue dries. This will make one corner of your wooden house model.

Attach another square piece of thin plywood to the second rectangular piece using wood glue. Clamp the pieces together until the glue dries. This will make the second corner of your wooden house model.

Attach the two corners and to each other, so as to make a square, using wood glue. Clamp the two pieces together until the glue dries.

Attach another square piece of thin plywood and to the triangle edges on the left-hand side of your house, using wood glue. Clamp the pieces together until the glue dries.

Attach the final square piece of thin plywood to the triangle edges on the right-hand side of your house, using wood glue. Clamp the pieces together until the glue dries.

Sand the plywood using sand paper until it is smooth.

Use paint to add colour and features, such as windows and doors if you like.

Tip

Use protective eye goggles and hand gloves whenever cutting the wood.
