Very few things set off a formal table like an elegantly folded napkin. For romantic dinners and celebrations for groups of men, decorate your table with napkins shaped like shawl-collared tuxedo jackets. This design looks intricate and formal, yet takes only minutes to create. The tuxedo napkin on your table leaves no doubt that this is, indeed, a special occasion.

Instructions

  1. 1

Lay your napkin on the table in front of you with the corners at top and bottom. Fold the top corner down to the bottom corner, creating a triangle with the folded edge on top.

  2. 2

Grasp the upper right corner and bring it down to the bottom corner, bringing it almost but not quite to the centre. Smooth this layer down. Grasp the upper left corner and bring it down to the bottom corner, also bringing it not quite to the centre. You will have both halves not quite touching in the centre, leaving a small space in between. The napkin is now shaped like a smaller square, with the corners at the top and bottom.

  3. 3

Find a point halfway between the right point and the bottom point. Grasp the napkin at this point with your right hand. Find a similar point between the left point and the bottom point and grasp it with your left hand. Fold the bottom of the napkin underneath and toward the back at these points, creating a straight line at the bottom.

  4. 4

Find a point halfway between the centre of the bottom line and the left end of the bottom line and grasp it with your left hand. Find a point halfway between the top point and the left point and grasp it with your right hand. Fold the left point of the napkin under at the line between these two points.

  5. 5

Find a point halfway between the centre of the bottom line and the right end of the bottom line and grasp it with your right hand. Find a point halfway between the top point and the right point and grasp it with your left hand. Fold the right point of the napkin under at the line between these two points.

  6. 6

Grasp the centre two lines of napkin that run down the middle and turn them outward. Keep turning this part out, creating the shawl collar of the jacket. Continue around the top of the jacket as if the collar has stood up and needs to be smoothed down on a person.

  7. 7

Place a small sprig of blossom and leaf on the jacket near the lapel, as for a boutonnière.
